Lise Sarfati joined Magnum Photos in 1997 and became a full Member
in 2001.
Lise Sarfati

Lise Sarfati obtained a master's degree in Russian studies from the
Sorbonne in Paris with a thesis on 1920s Russian photo-graphy. She
was hired in 1986 as official photographer of the Académie des
Beaux-Arts in Paris.
She went to Russia in 1989 and devoted nearly a decade of study to
this country with the help of a grant from the Ministry of French
Culture and Villa Medicis. She received the Prix Niépce and the
Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography (New
York) in 1996 in photojournalism for her Russian work, and exhibited
at the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris in 1996 and at
the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2002. Acta Est was her
first monograph, published in 2000.
After the death of Marguerite Duras in 1996, Sarfati photographed
the writer's apartment and her house in Neauphle-le-Chateau. Her
pictures constitute a sort of inventory of intimacy taken from the
places where Duras lived and worked. Sarfati joined Magnum Photos in
1997 and became a full member in 2001.
In 2003 Sarfati went to the United States and created a series with
young characters. This body of work, The New Life (La Vie Nouvelle),
published by Twin Palms in 2005, is designed to be viewed
sequentially, as episodes in a open-ended drama in which each
character represents material for a new subplot following its own
surprising path. The series The New Life has been exhibited in major
museums and galleries.
In 2004 Domus Artium in Salamanca, Spain, and the Nicolaj Centre of
Contemporary Art in Copenhagen, Denmark, showed a retrospective of
her work.
