匈牙利红泥灾害 The red mud catastrophe in Hungary

2010年10月4日，大量有毒红泥从匈牙利一家铝厂废水池涌向附近三个村庄，造成10人死亡，百人受伤。这些强碱性、有毒的红泥覆盖大约40平方公里的土地，对生态环境和经济造成不可估量的损失。
On the 4th of October, 2010, hundreds of thousands cubic meters of toxic, virulent red mudpoured out from the containment pond of the Hungarian Aluminium Production and TradeCompany Ltd. next to the city of Ajka in Hungary. Because of a dam break the spilling sludgeof around 600-700 000 cubic meters (21-24 million cubic feet) inundated the lower sectionsof the villages of Kolontár, Devecser and Somlóvásárhely. Ten people were killed, and manyhundreds injured because of the mud, which flooded the half of the village Kolontár and the two-third of Devecser, up to two meters high in some places. The heavily alkaline, virulentindustrial waste was spread over around 40 square kilometres (15.5 square miles), causinginestimable ecological and economical damages.For 120 years the industry has been unable to deal with the by-product of the alumina production, the red mud. The main problem is the highly alkaline pH: it is ten times as strongas raw bleach.

On the 4th of October, 2010,the mudslide arrived without any warning.

灾难发生后数天，居民仍不愿重回家园。
For many days, the inhabitants of Kolontár could not return to their homes. The day following the tragedy most of them commented that they do not intend to move back to their homes.

2010年10月4日，铝厂废物池附近的三处村庄被红泥淹没。
On the 4th of October, 2010,the three settlements near the containment pond was flooded by hundreds of thousands cubic meters of sludge.

泄漏的红泥是生产氧化铝时产生的副产品，对身体有害，含强碱性有毒金属铅及其他物质。与皮肤接触可能致命，因此需用足够多的水把它洗净。
The spilling red mud is the byproduct of alumina production, harmful to health. It contain sheavily alkaline and toxic metals, lead (Pb) among others. Coming in contact with the skin the mud causes a virulent effect, so it has to be washed with abundant water right away.

2010年10月4日，三四百居民被迫撤离。
On the 4th of October, 2010，3-400 people from Kolontár and around 500 people from Devecser had to leave their homes in the first few days.

     除了人灾，这场灾难还造成大量家禽和野生动物死亡，幸存下来的动物也遍体鳞伤。
     Besides the human victims of the disaster, vast numbers of domestic and wild animals
     perished, and the majority of the survivors suffered severe injuries.

2010年10月4日，红泥泄漏造成10人死亡，百人受伤。受伤者几乎70%的皮肤被烧伤。
On the 4th of October, 2010,ten people were killed in the tragedy, and many hundreds suffered first and second degree burn injuries from the alkali. In the case of the most severe injury almost 70% of the body surface was burnt.

类似这样的红泥灾害从来没有发生过，因此对于环境造成的短期和长期危害还不确定。
No similar red mud catastrophe was seen before: that is why any kind of forecast about the short and the long term environmental impacts are uncertain

2010年10月4日，在铝厂附近的德维瑟夫村，曾经住着5000人，四分之一的房屋被红泥淹没。绝大多数人流离失所。
On the 4th of October, 2010, in Devecser, inhabitated by 5000 people, one fourth of the houses were affected by the mud spill. Most of the people had to leave their homes.

类似这样的红泥灾害在全世界都没有发生过。首次发生在匈牙利是由于当地氧化铝工厂废水池的大坝突然垮塌引起的。
No similar catastrophe ever happened in this industry, nowhere in the world. For the first time it happened in Hungary that the dam of the container pond of an alumina production factory broke through.
